Review: Masters of the Universe Revelations

So, the Kevin Smith led Masters of the Universe Revelations has finally dropped on Netflix... I am sure most of you have heard of this and probably have been watching the controversy surrounding it. However, if you haven't, let me sum it up for you.

Kevin Smith told us that this would be a continuation of the original Filmation cartoon series (a lie). He told us that he was a He-Man super fan and that he couldn't wait to run home from school to watch it (a damn lie).

Smith promised that this series was his love letter to all of us He-Man fans (A bald face lie). Smith later denied rumours that the show would side-line He-Man and feature Teela instead (OMG another damn lie!). Then after all this, he won't shut up about it. He gleefully builds up a beloved character just so he can kill him off, and brags about how he did it just to anger fans, and now he has been caught giddily giggling about killing off the main character not once but twice!

With all that said, the animation is great, the voice acting is pretty good with a couple of exceptions, namely Mark Hamill's Skeletor sounds just like the Joker! However, this interpretation of the story seems to be written soley to piss off fans!

I suggest if you want to see an updated Masters of the Universe that you skip this and watch the Mike Young series that came out back in 2002. While updated it respected the source material. The Netflix series has no respect for the source material at all! Many of the characters act out of character, the story is almost a beat for beat rip off of Star Trek: The Search for Spock!

The series ends on a cliffhanger, and the second series could fix all this, but the damage has been done. I doubt that many fans will return for it.

Have you seen the new series? Did you love it or hate it? Tell us why in the comments section below!

  1. Cringer and Orko annoyed me so much in the first episode that I could no longer watch.

  3. I hate to say that I called it, but as soon as I heard "Netflix" and "Kevin Smith", I knew it wasn't going to be worth trying to watch. It's nice to hear that I was right :)

  4. I know I'm in the minority, but I really liked it. Because for almost 40 years now we've gotten the He-Man vs. Skeletor battles that always end the same way. There are hundreds if not thousands of stories that are all similar. In this series, we take the next step forward and see what happens beyond what we already know. I understand the hate from everyone, but I really dug seeing a new take on the old property and look forward to the next five episodes.

    1. ... I also liked it. If I wanted more of the same, I'd go back and watch the original. I challenge the statement regarding Smith lying about it being a continuation of the original series- it was just taken to a different place. Fanatics tend to get ruffled if anything changes, but those things don't bother me much. For example, the Filmation series from the '80s was nothing like what my imagination dreamt up reading the mini comics and playing with the toys- I remember initially thinking the show was silly & childish compared to the cosmic savagery I initially fantasized about when MOTU's mysterious characters first appeared.
