Kenner Super Powers Orion

Card design by http://polymerphelia.blogspot.com/
THE SCOURGE OF APOKOLIPS

Orion is the son of the dreaded Darkseid. He was raised on New Genesis by Highfather as part of a treaty between the warring planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. Highfather exchanged his son for Darkseid's son, as a show of good faith. Orion fights the forces of evil as one of the greatest champions of the planet New Genesis.

Included in the 3rd and final wave of the Super Powers Collection and released by Kenner in 1986, the Super Powers Collection Orion action figure features a "Power Action Astro-Punch" action mechanism, turning the knob on top of his helmet, spins Orion's face from bad to good!

Kirby's redesign of Orion
When Jack Kirby signed with DC Comics in the early 1970s, the deal was the same as he had at Marvel Comics. He was strictly a freelancer, therefore owned no rights to any of the Fourth World characters that he created. In the early 1980s, the higher-ups at DC feeling bad about the fact that he wasn't paid anything extra for those characters, had him re-design all of his Fourth World characters for their Super Powers action figures! Kirby was paid extra fees for these new designs and those fees were very substantial! Kirby did not even have to dramatically alter the designs for DC for them to count as a "new" design. After all they were actually just looking for any excuse to get Kirby some extra money at this point. Orion however got a pretty significant redesign with a new helmet and costume.

Now lets take a look at the figure!

  1. It was like Kirby realized Masters of the Universe Man-E-Faces was inspired by his work and copied that homage.

    1. I have often wondered about influence of Man-E-Faces on Kirby's Orion re-design... Man-E-Faces first appeared in 1983 and Super Powers series 3 came out 3 years later in 1986.

    2. More food for thought: Scott Neitlich has apparently seen evidence in Mattel's archives to suggest that He-Man grew out of a New Gods toyline with designs by Kirby. So Man-e-faces might well have Kirby DNA...

  2. Ugh, this redesign is so...disappointing, I guess. The original version of Orion is one of the coolest-hooking superheroes of all-time. I'm shocked that Jack Kirby did this to one of his greatest creations.

But then again, I guess that's what happens when you have an explosive imagination. And it does look interesting, but just not for Orion.
