Orion is the son of the dreaded Darkseid. He was raised on New Genesis by Highfather as part of a treaty between the warring planets of New Genesis and Apokolips. Highfather exchanged his son for Darkseid's son, as a show of good faith. Orion fights the forces of evil as one of the greatest champions of the planet New Genesis.
Included in the 3rd and final wave of the Super Powers Collection and released by Kenner in 1986, the Super Powers Collection Orion action figure features a "Power Action Astro-Punch" action mechanism, turning the knob on top of his helmet, spins Orion's face from bad to good!

It was like Kirby realized Masters of the Universe Man-E-Faces was inspired by his work and copied that homage.
ReplyDeleteI have often wondered about influence of Man-E-Faces on Kirby's Orion re-design... Man-E-Faces first appeared in 1983 and Super Powers series 3 came out 3 years later in 1986.
DeleteMore food for thought: Scott Neitlich has apparently seen evidence in Mattel's archives to suggest that He-Man grew out of a New Gods toyline with designs by Kirby. So Man-e-faces might well have Kirby DNA...

Ugh, this redesign is so...disappointing, I guess. The original version of Orion is one of the coolest-hooking superheroes of all-time. I'm shocked that Jack Kirby did this to one of his greatest creations.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, I guess that's what happens when you have an explosive imagination. And it does look interesting, but just not for Orion.
